Letter from the Founders
JULY 19, 2022
Today marks a monumental step in the history of our sport, and it marks an equally big step for Major League Quadball.
After all of this time and all of this planning, it’s incredibly exciting to finally type that out publicly. Because changing the name of our sport opens unprecedented opportunities for growth, exposure and partnerships, and our league intends to take advantage of every last one to remain on the cutting edge of innovation and engagement.
We have come a long way since our first season back in 2015. Our league has expanded to 15 full franchises and one trial expansion franchise. Rules debuted in our league have not only caught on in other domestic leagues, but in leagues across the world. Our MLQ Championship matches have been broadcast nationally on television. Our digital media team has consistently put out the best product in the sport, and our social media has gained an international following and interacted with major brands and influencers.
We were the first quidditch league to return in the aftermath of the COVID pandemic, and our policies not only ensured a safe return to play but became models in the sport. But beyond 2021 being a safe season, it was also a season of excitement, as so many athletes returned to the pitch. We continued to expand on that in 2022, welcoming back our Canadian franchises and improving on our total athlete registration numbers.
Now, we are excited to be looking forward to what the future holds, and we are forever grateful to have all of you on this journey with us. This name change is a game changer for us, and we are looking to make the most of it.
Of course, we did not make this name-change lightly. Quadball is the result of thousands of surveyed stakeholders all across the world, hundreds of volunteer hours, tens of discussions with legal teams, and the collaborative efforts of MLQ and USQ. No one person or organization owns the future of quadball, and it was vitally important to us, as well as to USQ, that the entire community would leave its mark on this momentous change.
Big moments make for big opportunities, and thanks to the project-centered organizational structure we put in place during the COVID-canceled season, we are ready to run with them. This fall, we will be revamping our franchises’ footprint to set them all up for success as we enter a new era of the sport. In the summer 2023, we will be running our pilot program for MLQ Next Up, our league’s own youth day camp, in Howard County, Md. And before the end of the year, we will be debuting a number of brand changes to go along with our new name, so make sure to get out to MLQ Championship for your final opportunity to watch the sport of quidditch as we currently know it.
While this is the shortlist of changes we have coming just around the corner, it is far from all of them. The name change has opened so many doors, and our departments are already beginning the process of going through as many of them as possible to make our league and our sport the best that it can be. Make sure to continue to check in with us here at MLQuadball.com to stay up to date with all of the latest innovations.
MLQ, and the entire sport of quadball, would be nothing without our players, our volunteers, and our fans. You supported us when we debuted with the idea to create a semi-pro league for a sport still in many ways in its infancy, and helped it grow into the continental league it is today. You supported us when we became a video game league for a year during the pandemic, and when we brought quidditch back after it. You supported us when we’ve succeeded, and when we’ve failed.
Now, we ask you to support us, and the sport, once more, as we take this massive next step. Quadball isn’t just a new name, it’s a symbol for a future for the sport without limitations. With it, we hope to turn the sport into exactly what it aspires to be: something for all.
See you on the pitch,
Ethan Sturm and Amanda Dallas
