Practice squad registration is open and remains open all summer. Contact your local franchise to inquire about available spots.
At MLQ, we understand the value of preparing for the future. Practice squads allow franchises to grow the next generation of quadball stars and help develop the sport at the highest level.
Practice squad rosters are rolling throughout the season but do cap at 18 players at any given time. While practice squad athletes cannot be added to a franchise’s match roster, they do have the opportunity compete in their own competitions, including divisional showcases and the MLQ Next Gen Showcase at MLQ Championship in August.
Practice Squad Levels and Fees
Players who have been on a 30-person franchise roster for two or more years (whether consecutive or not) are not eligible to participate in practice squad events except practices. If a practice squad player, practice squad coach, or franchise head coach feels an exception should be made for a specific athlete, they may email commissioners@mlquadball.com and gameplay@mlquadball.com with their reasoning to request an exemption.
Practice Only: $25
This fee only covers participation in practices with a given MLQ franchise and includes discounted entry to MLQ Championship. Anyone of any experience level is eligible for this level of participation.
Full Practice Squad Season Participant: $40
This level is for practice squad players who will attend at least four practices over the summer and want to play in a Divisional Next Gen Series and/0r the MLQ Next Gen Showcase at MLQ Championship. Athletes who have not been listed on any MLQ franchise 30-person roster for two or more years in their career are eligible for this level of participation.
Practice Squad Events
Practices
Practice squads will practice at the same place and time as MLQ franchise teams. It is up to the MLQ practice squad coach if they would like to coordinate additional practice times. Practice squad players will be allowed to participate in MLQ franchise team practices at the franchise head coach’s discretion.
Divisional Next Gen Series
In the event a division has enough practice squads to compete in a three-game series, MLQ will host a divisional Next Gen Series during the regular season.
MLQ Next Gen Showcase
The MLQ Next Gen Showcase highlights the future of MLQ: our practice squad athletes. The event will take place day two on Pitch Two of MLQ Championship while the Benepe Cup continues on Pitch One. Any athletes who participate in at least four practice squad practices over the course of the MLQ season are eligible to play in this event and will receive a custom Next Gen jersey.
Practice Squad Tryouts and Cuts
Practice squad players are restricted by the same radius rules as active franchise roster players and can submit the same radius-related waiver. Athletes interested in being considered for an MLQ practice squad must agree to all MLQ policies and provide information about their insurance coverage. They can do so by filling out the MLQ Athlete Tryout Registration and indicating interest in consideration for a practice squad spot in the first section of the form.
During the initial MLQ tryout phase (more info here), practice squad coaches will work closely with MLQ franchise head coaches to determine which athletes they would like on the practice squad for the given season. If you want to play on the practice squad but miss tryouts, you can contact the franchise to inquire about open spots.
Each MLQ team is allowed up to an 18-player practice squad. The practice squad coach and the franchise head coach can name players to the practice squad throughout the regular season, provided the player paid their dues and would not exceed the team’s 18-player cap for the practice squad. Practice squad members can be replaced if they are removed or choose to leave the practice squad.
Practice squad players may be removed at any time at the discretion of MLQ franchise and practice squad coaching staff. Some possible reasons for removing players may include:
Poor attendance record
Demonstrating a consistent lack of work ethic
Demonstrating a consistently poor attitude and/or respect toward coaches, managers and/or other athletes
Athlete’s current ability does not meet MLQ standards
FAQ
-
Franchise rosters are composed of 30 athletes that compete in MLQ series and the MLQ Championship.
Practice squads are composed of 18 athletes and do not participate in MLQ series. Practice squads do, however, complete in the MLQ Next Gen Showcase, held on the Sunday of MLQ Championship weekend, and possibly other practice squad-designated events (such as the East Next Gen SuperSeries). More info on practice squads can be found here.
-
Practice squad players go through the same tryout process as the 30-person franchise roster athletes. More information can be found here.
-
No. Players who have been on a 30-person franchise roster for two years (whether consecutive or not) are not eligible to participate in practice squad events except practices. If a coach or player feels an exception should be made due to skill level, they can petition the league contacting commissioners@mlquadball.com and gameplay@mlquadball.com.
-
Yes. A player needs to send their dues to their manager before participating in a practice.
Practice squad dues should first be sent to the practice squad manager or, if applicable, the franchise manager and then the given manager should send them to MLQ. Any team suspected or found violating the MLQ Practice Policy (ie. having a non-registered or unpaid player at practice) will be subject to punishment at the discretion of the MLQ Directors, this may include a fine or suspension or release of franchise and/or practice squad staff.
-
You should contact the MLQ franchise at their MLQ email address. Franchise and practice squad coaches may add any player, anytime to the team’s practice squad. A player does not have to participate in the regular season tryouts. This allows for individuals new to quidditch to join the team throughout the season. All players MUST reside within the franchise radius, fill out the required waivers, pay the practice squad dues and provide insurance information. Any team suspected or found violating the MLQ Practice Policy (ie. having a non-registered or unpaid player at practice) will be subject to punishment at the discretion of the MLQ Directors, this may include suspension or release of franchise and/or practice squad staff.
-
Practice squad athletes that participate in a Next Gen Series and the MLQ Next Gen Showcase at MLQ Championship will receive MLQ-branded shirts to wear during their matches and keep after the competition ends. Athletes or practice squads that do not participate in one of these events will not receive shirts.
-
Once a player is removed from or chooses to leave a team’s practice squad, they cannot be re-added at any point in the season. As previously mentioned, the practice squad is an opportunity for young or inexperienced players to grow into MLQ-level talent. Consistency and repetition is key to this growth and cannot be met if there is constant movement within the squad.
Should a player be removed from or choose to leave the 30-person roster and a spot be available on the 18-person practice squad, the franchise and practice squad head coach may discuss and the franchise head coach may decide to drop the player to the practice squad.
