Quad Quips: Six

Submissions undergo light copy editing for clarity.

MLQ athletes have a lot to say and now we’re giving them space to broadcast those opinions weekly. “Quad Quips” is a series consisting of player thoughts and feelings from around MLQ. Each week a randomly-selected batch of athletes are sent a number of questions and prompts for which to respond. The majority are open-ended though multiple choice surveys are sometimes included.

Who is the player to watch this weekend and why?

“Annika Kim, New York. When she’s on the field she just finds ways to succeed.” - Ryan Leary, New York Titans

“Baldemar Nunez is going to have to continue to play heavy minutes for League City while also dealing with previous teammate Daniel Williams (San Antonio). LC’s chances of winning the series depends on Baldy opening scoring opportunities for them.” - Taylor Tracy, Austin Outlaws

“Andrew Acosta. He is the next Miguel Esparza.” - Brandon Kubena, League City Legends

“Matthew Blackwood. San Antonio will need him to step up as the second option behind Esparza for San Antonio to have any chance at beating League City.” - Ryan Cleary, Kansas City Stampede

“Ugo Nwadike's third career competitive quadball experience–his growth has been exponential.” - Savannah Campbell, Toronto Raiders

“LCvsSA: Luke Langlinais–the GOAT of UTSA. Legendary numbers yet no recognition. Gonna put those damn Gen Z kids to sleep and give them a welcome to the league moment.” - Javi Tijerina, San Antonio Soldados

“The Cleveland Riff beaters to see how many times they get stiff-armed to the ground. Over/under is 5.” - Tad Walters, Chicago Prowl

Which player matchup deserves all eyes this weekend? Why?

“LC vs their podcast.” - Juli Nuetzel, Washington Admirals

“Alyssa Villaba (SA) vs. Swathi Mannem (LC)–each has helped bring a Texas school a collegiate championship and have taken over big roles on their respective MLQ squads.” - Ryan Cleary, Kansas City Stampede

“Miguel Esparza (SA) vs. Baldemar Nunez (LC). I'm convinced that the only way LC stays in the game, and keeps Miguel from running up the score on fast breaks, is with some solid beater play.” - Zachary Armantrading, New York Titans

“Nathan Wilkinson (LC) vs. Matt Blackwood (SA). A lot of people see them as the right hand men in the Jay vs Hayden matchup, and this weekend we'll get to see how they play against each other.” - Brandon Kubena, League City Legends

“Alyssa Villalba and Catherine Hay (SA) vs. Swathi Mannem and Mallory Hughes (LC). These players are huge factors for their teams and are some of the best young players in quadball.” - David Avila, San Antonio Soldados

“Baldemar Nunez (LC) vs. Daniel Williams (SA)–whichever team can dominate the beater game and open up lanes for their chasers will win the series.” - Juan Acevedo, League City Legends

“LCvsSA. Being the only two South franchises to beat the Outlaws, LC being the most recent, they will be battling for a top spot in the south. Plus the other 2 series are easy sweeps so nothing interesting there…” - Taylor Tracy, Austin Outlaws

Our #MLQ2024 Series of the Week is the League City Legends vs. the San Antonio Soldados. Give us your thoughts.

“Daddies sweep and show League City what real legends look like.” - David Avila, San Antonio Soldados

“It’s the battle of the best jerseys in the league, in my opinion, but, for real, it’ll be a really entertaining series. I don’t see a sweep. I think 2-1, SA.” - Ryan Leary, New York Titans

“Split series that will come down to the last possession/golden goal scenario to see who takes the series W.” - Juan Acevedo, League City Legends

“League City will blow at least one game where they hold a substantial lead.” - Juli Nuetzel, Washington Admirals

“If SA can’t control and pull away during flag runner on pitch, LC is going to make them pay with Juan Acevedo being the most underrated seeker in the league. I foresee a close score in all three games and SOP determining the series winner.” - Taylor Tracy, Austin Outlaws

“League City claims its first ever Texas State Championship this weekend.” - Charlton Tramel, New Orleans Curse

“This series will be determined by the beaters. Both teams’ chasers have the athleticism and coaching to thrive in this series, but it really depends on whose beaters can lock it down.” - Chase Contreras, League City Legends

“LC was a fluke; they're not getting any more wins this season.” - Tad Walters, Chicago Prowl

“You can’t spell League City without an L. Linsanity run is over, time’s up, lil bro.” - Javi Tijerina, San Antonio Soldados

Whip out the magic 8 ball and give us your upcoming weekend's predictions that you have not already provided.

“Most boring week of MLQ. Give us the 3 wins already. History doesn’t repeat but it rhymes. Also, New York clears (USA clears in general, sorry, Canada). Chicago clears by the sheer nature of their public transportation system.” - Javi Tijerina, San Antonio Soldados

“Ugochukwu Nwadike with three flag pulls.” - Juli Nuetzel, Washington Admirals

“Daniel Williams dominates the weekend yet again.” - David Avila, San Antonio Soldados

“NY and CHI sweep pretty easily. LCvsSA won’t have a sweep. If LC can keep their momentum after the series win against the Outlaws and not get too cocky, they’ll guarantee a 2-1 over SA.” - Taylor Tracy, Austin Outlaws

Taunting is Legal

“I should probably be in a kitchen somewhere, but instead I'll be in Cleveland cooking up these nobodies.” - Tad Walters, Chicago Prowl

mrcthecrossings.org–found a great place for y'all to retire after our series.” - David Avila, San Antonio Soldados

“Someone call PETA–Black Bears about to catch a beat down.” - Zachary Armantrading, New York Titans

“Haven’t bothered to watch film. No need. We got this in the bag, easy clap. I watch less film than Johnny Manziel and yet we still gonna mop the floor with these janitors. Playing League City is like Larry Bird putting up numbers against a bunch of plumbers.” - Javi Tijerina, San Antonio Soldados

Grab Bag

“Real talk the south has never been this interesting to watch. Whoever wins SA vs LC will likely be in the driver's seat for the rest of this season. We're watching a major shift in the quadball universe and i'm hype for it.” - Zachary Armantrading, New York Titans

“Seven days apart Austin went from a losing record to being the first team to qualify for champs. That's insane.” - Brandon Kubena, League City Legends

“I’m excited to see all of the rest of the games in the North and East in the battle of Mid. South clears everyday of the week.” - Javi Tijerina, San Antonio Soldados

“The South used to be good but now all they do is yap, yell at each other, and hope their one guy who drives can score the ball more than the guy on the other team. super good quadball.” - Tad Walters, Chicago Prowl
